Abstract

This chapter addresses the issue of pregnancy with mitral stenosis and mitral regurgitation and cardiac failure starting with the case history, examination, and investigations. Pertinent questions related to the issue are given in this chapter along with their crisp and to the point answers. Pregnancy with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) may increase the maternal and fetal risks. Depending on the type and severity of maternal RHD, patients respond differently to the hemodynamics of pregnancy resulting in abnormalities of functional capacity, left ventricular (LV) function and pulmonary pressure. Hence, in the management of the most common RHD like mitral stenosis (MS) and or mitral regurgitation (MR) in pregnant women, prompt bedside diagnosis, appropriate investigations and treatment are important, to reduce the morbidity and mortality in both mother and the child.
