Abstract

This chapter focuses on advances in the management of developmental glaucoma. The primary objective in the management of the developmental glaucoma is to normalize and permanently control the intraocular pressure (IOP) to prevent loss of visual acuity, to preserve visual field and ocular integrity and to stimulate the development of binocular stereoscopic vision. Glaucoma in an infant is an uncommon disease but the impact on the visual development is extreme. The aim of this chapter is to highlight the factors influencing therapeutic decisions, advances in medical therapy, surgical therapy with special emphasis on the recent microsurgical techniques and prognosis of the patients with the developmental glaucoma. The choice of surgical therapy in developmental glaucomas is dependent on a variety of factors. Surgical treatment is usually required for developmental glaucoma, using goniotomy or trabeculotomy as primary surgical therapy. Both of these procedures have a high success rate, are equally effective as initial surgical treatment, and have been assessed in a large number of patients over long periods of time.
