Abstract

Neurology is perceived as a difficult branch of medicine and the bladder as the most difficult subject to understand. The bladder is a very simple organ with simple functions. The anatomical structures are detrusor, internal or smooth muscle sphincter, which is an involuntary muscle, and external or striated muscle sphincter which is under voluntarily control. The dominant innervation is from the parasympathetic nervous system derived from the intermediolateral column of sacral cord (S2,3,4). The sympathetic innervation is from the intermediolateral column of thoracolumbar cord (D10-L2). The neurogenic bladder is of two types following as UMN and LMN. One can understand the neurogenic bladder better when it is compared to the UMN, LMN lesions of paraparesis. Symptoms of bladder dysfunction are also discussed in this chapter.
