The tremors in Parkinson’s disease occur at rest (resting tremors) and disappear on movement. Essential tremors on the other hand appear during movement and disappear at rest. Parkinsonism is a syndrome consisting of rigidity, bradykinesia, tremor, and gait disorder. Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder (after Alzheimer’s) which is due to progressive degeneration of dopaminergic nigral cells and intracellular inclusions of Lewy bodies. This chapter covers the clinical features of vascular parkinsonism, differentiation of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease, vascular parkinsonism, normal pressure hydrocephalus, causes of secondary parkinsonism, clinical features of drug-induced parkinsonism, and types of atypical parkinsonism.
