Abstract

Pain is a protective signal that alerts us to the possibility of damage, teaches us to avoid it and helps recovery and repair. The biological processes that occur in the body with pain are interesting, and an increased insight into these mechanisms has improved our understanding of pain and its treatment. This chapter covers the mechanism of pain, acute pain signaling (nociception pathway), classification of pain, and acute to chronic pain mechanism. Acute pain can affect the different organ systems of the body like the central nervous system (CNS), cardiovascular system (CVS), respiratory, gastrointestinal tract (GIT), hormonal and immune systems. Acute pain can become chronic, based on the stimulus, the patient’s medical condition, role of environmental, hormonal, immune and psychosocial factors.
