Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the acute pain management. Principle of pain management remains the same whether it is acute or chronic, nociceptive or neuropathic. Acute pain must be treated promptly and adequately. If it is not controlled in time then it might result in physiological and psychological changes in the patient which in majority of patients could have bad outcome. Like in cases of polytrauma, along with maintaining hemodynamic stability of patient, one also needs to control pain to decrease stress on heart and body in general. This chapter covers the pain medication, nonopioids analgesics, opioid analgesics, local anesthetics, coanalgesics, adjuvant medications, multimodal approach to acute pain management, and case example for acute pain management. In this chapter, three cases are also described.
