Abstract

Vitamin D regulates calcium metabolism and bone mineralization and its deficiency is traditionally associated with rickets, osteomalacia, muscle weakness, reduced bone density, and risk of fractures. There has been immense interest in the noncalcitropic functions of vitamin D as most cells express the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and can also produce the biologically active form of vitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] for paracrine functions. Vitamin D regulates a multitude of biological functions such as cell differentiation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, immunomodulation, neuroprotection, glucose metabolism, and cardiovascular health. This chapter covers the vitamin D and immunomodulation, effects of vitamin D on glucose homeostasis, vitamin D and type 1 diabetes mellitus, vitamin D and type 2 diabetes mellitus, vitamin D and diabetic complications, vitamin D and gestational diabetes, and management of vitamin D deficiency.
