Abstract

Thyroid hormones play an essential role in the cellular metabolism and homeostatic functions of the body. The thyroid gland is located in the anterior portion of the neck and secretes thyoxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroid disorders are the second most common endocrine disorders, and are seen in about 5–8% of the population. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by the absolute (type 1) or relative (type 2) insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. Thyroid disorders have shown to be of increased frequency in the patients with diabetes when compared with the general population. This increased prevalence is due to the advanced age and autoimmunity. The thyroid disorders are common in patients with diabetes with profound implications on the glycemic and metabolic control. Regular screening is indicated for early detection and definitive management of subclinical thyroid dysfunction. Management of thyroid disorders is similar to nondiabetic patients with certain peculiarities.
