Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the antidiabetic drugs in type 2 diabetes mellitus in women. Diabetes is defined as a group of metabolic disease which is characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Diabetes is closely linked with women’s health and also the reproductive life which includes preconceptional consulting, pregnancy, and menopause. Oral hypoglycemic drugs used during preconception, oral hypoglycemic drugs used in lactation, and oral hypoglycemic drugs used in menopause are discussed in this chapter. Metformin and glyburide can be safely administered along with insulin in pregnancy. Studies regarding glulisine and glargine are few, small and retrospective, and hence, not recommended.
