Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the biliovascular injury. Biliovascular injury is not uncommon during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is more common in high (proximal) bile duct injury (BDI) and in patients with a previous attempt at repair of BDI. The incidence of BDI ranges from 0.4–0.6% during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Biliovascular injury (BVI) denotes combined injury to bile duct and hepatic artery [most commonly the right hepatic artery (RHA)] and/or portal vein. This chapter covers the incidence of BVI, pathogenesis of BVI, classification of BVI, blood supply, diagnosis of BVI, investigations of BVI, pathophysiology of BVI, clinical significance of BVI, and nonsurgical management of BVI.
