Abstract

This chapter focuses on qualitative reactions of urea. Urea is the end products of catabolism of proteins. It is excreted mainly in the urine. It is neutral in solution. The tests are performed to identify urea following as sodium hypobromite test and specific urease test described in this chapter. Sodium hypobromite reacts with urea and nitrogen gas is released as brisk effervescence. When urea is treated with sodium hypobromite it decomposes to give N2. Urea is hydrolyzed to NH3 and CO2, which form (NH4)2CO3 to make the solution alkaline. Urease specifically acts only on urea.
