Abstract

This chapter focuses on qualitative reactions of uric acid. Uric acid is the end product of catabolism of nucleic acids in mammals. It is excreted mainly in the urine. A supplied uric acid is alkaline because it has to be dissolved in an alkali for preparing the solution. The tests are performed to identify uric acid following as HCl test, Schiff’s test, phosphotungstic acid test, and Benedict’s uric acid test. Uric acid is insoluble in acidic medium. Uric acid reduces silver nitrate to metallic silver in alkaline medium.
