The first important step for proper interpretation is optimal collection of cervical cytology specimen. Things needed for cervical cytology smear collection include instrument, fixative, glass slide for conventional preparation (CP), and laboratory form. The patient should be in the dorsolithotomy position as in this position the cervix is better visualized. In case of conventional preparation either broom or spatula is used. The collection of the cervical sampling method is almost same. Presently two companies are available for liquid-based cytology (LBC) i.e. ThinPrep (TP) and SurePath (SP). Unlike smear preparation and fixation in the conventional preparation, these techniques provide the methods of immediate fixation of the cells in liquid fixative. Advantages and disadvantages of LBC preparation, significant differences of the cytology in LBC compared to CP, specific changes in LBC, and automated screening devices are discussed briefly in this chapter.
