Local anesthetic agents are the medication that causes reversible loss of pain sensation, although other senses like loss of muscle power are often affected as well. Different methods used for local anesthesia are spinal and epidural anesthesia, surface anesthesia, infiltration anesthesia, field block, peripheral nerve block, etc. Regional anesthesia is a technique that infiltrates local anesthetic agents adjacent to peripheral nerves (nerve blocks). This is mainly used for complicated lacerations, fractures, and dislocations. Preparation for regional blocks, advantages, disadvantages, and complications of regional anesthesia are discussed in this chapter. Regional blocks can be given using anatomical landmark technique, peripheral nerve locator, and regional block under ultrasound guidance. The introduction of ultrasound techniques for regional anesthesia is currently a focus for anesthesia education. A detailed discussion on ultrasound-guided regional blocks has been also provided in this chapter.
