Abstract

This chapter introduces neurotransmitters. Central nervous system (CNS) is one of the most complex systems. Drugs acting on CNS are used for either therapy/pleasure. Action and location of neurotransmitters and similar drugs is presented in this chapter. Functions and effects of receptors or various ion channels are also tabulated in this chapter which is self-explanatory. Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter. Metabotropic receptors are G-protein coupled receptors. They are involved in long-term adaptive changes. Inhibitory neurotransmitter are also covered in this chapter.
