Abstract

Autacoids are formed in various tissues and have diverse physiological and pathological roles. Histamine is a biogenic and tissue amine. It is present in many animal and plant tissues as well as venoms and stings. They act on four subtypes of histamine receptors. Betahistine, a histamine analogue (H2 agonist), used orally to treat vertigo in Ménière’s disease, since it increases blood flow to inner ear. Antihistaminics competitively block H1 receptors and they antagonize the effects of histamine. Pharmacological actions of antihistaminics are mentioned in this chapter. Second-generation antihistamines there uses are also covered in this chapter. Vertigo is sensation of rotation or movement of one’s self or surrounding in any plane.
