This chapter covers discussion on hematinics. They are the drugs/substances that increase hemoglobin level in the blood. These include iron, folic acid, vitamin B12, pyridoxine, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, copper or erythropoietin (from kidneys). All the elemental iron present is not absorbed. Absorption varies from preparation to preparation. Ferrous salts are absorbed better. Rate and extent of absorption also depends on deficiency of the hemoglobin. Absorption is more when deficiency is more. Acidic pH and vitamin C enhances absorption of iron. Folic acid is a combination of glutamic acid, para-aminobenzoic acid, and pteridine nucleus. Hematopoietic growth factors stimulate growth and differentiation of blood cells, for example, erythropoietin, thrombopoietin, myeloid growth factors.
