Quinolone are bactericidal against gram negative organisms such as Escherichia coli, Shigella, Proteus, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter. They are of Good oral absorption but rapid renal excretion, so there is inadequate plasma concentration. Compared to quinolones, fluoroquinolones have a wider spectrum, higher therapeutic plasma concentration, better tissue penetration, less side effects, lower incidence of resistance. Fluoroquinolones inhibit bacterial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) gyrase and to Topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are required for DNA replication and transcription. Chemotherapy of urinary tract infection and urinary analgesics are also covered in this chapter.
