Abstract

Alpha adrenergic blocking agents are classified into nonselective and selective. Selective α2 blockade causes hypotension without tachycardia (since α2 receptors are not blocked, hence there is no increase in NA). Phenoxybenzamine is a nonselective, irreversible blockade of α-receptors. Binding with α-receptors is covalent, hence blockade is irreversible non-equilibrium type. Beta adrenergic blockers are classified as noncardioselective, cardioselective, partial agonist, with additional β2-agonistic property, and with additional antioxidant property. Some individual beta blockers are acebutolol, celiprolol, and timolol. At the end of this chapter there are 25 questions along with their crisp and to the point answers have been also given, which will be of benefit for answering the short answers and even a viva voce question.
