Abstract

When placenta (anchoring placental villi) is invading uterus beyond decidua basalis, it is called adherent placenta. Morbidly adherent placenta is a general term that includes placenta accreta, increta, and percreta depending on extent of invasion into the myometrium or beyond it (perforating uterine wall). This is commonly due to the complete or partial absence of the decidua basalis leading to defect in the Nitabuch membrane. Accreta meaning adheres to myometrium, increta meaning invades the myometrium, and percreta meaning perforates the myometrium and serosa. The chapter covers topics like risk factors associated with morbidly adherent placenta, Incidence of placenta accreta, diagnosis for diagnose placenta previa or adherent placenta, ultrasonographical findings in adherent placenta, role of classical cesarean section in the presence of a suspected placenta accreta, and many others.
