Abstract

Low back pain (LBP) is a highly prevalent and debilitating condition. The emphasis on its management is of crying need nowadays. Low back pain is a significantly disabling condition, responsible for long periods of absence from work and affecting health related quality of life (HRQoL). It is rarely fatal but profoundly affects functioning and reduces persons HRQoL due to suffering, failed treatments, difficulties at work and emotional distress. This chapter covers the pain generators, classification, evaluation of chronic low back pain, physical examination, neurologic examination, diagnostic imaging, and management of CLBP. Management of CLBP is challenging because of its heterogeneous etiologies, symptoms and underlying mechanisms. CLBP incurs substantial treatment and loss of productivity costs. Hence, it is of utmost concern to provide cost-effective and safe treatments.
