Abstract

The American Heart Association (AHA) defines atrial fibrillation (AF) as rapid oscillation and/or fibrillation of the atria due to irregular electrical activity which varies in amplitude, shape and timing, whereas the atrioventricular conduction remains intact. This chapter covers the risk factors for AF, classification of AF, pathophysiology of AF, predictors of perioperative AF (POAF) after surgery, prevention, and management of atrial fibrillation. The pathophysiology of AF is incompletely understood. The atrial remodeling due to the advancing age leading to fibrotic atria is thought to make the atria vulnerable to POAF. Other comorbidities like hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and ischemic heart disease make the patient vulnerable to POAF and then the perioperative factors further add to these risk factors.
