Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that requires intensive multifactorial risk management beyond strict glycemic control. The adverse effects of hyperglycemia are usually categorized as microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) and macrovascular [coronary artery disease (CAD), peripheral arterial disease, and cerebrovascular disease]. Atherosclerosis is generally more extensive and occurs prematurely in diabetic subjects than in the general population leading to a 1.5- to 2-fold increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) events, including CAD, stroke, and heart failure. This chapter covers the prevalence of carotid artery disease in diabetes and its significance, risk factors of carotid artery disease in diabetes, carotid intervention in diabetics, meta-analysis.
