Abstract

This chapter addresses some of the key aspects of mind-heart connection and how this interplay can cause as well as help control heart disease. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and diabetes claim about 20 million lives per year worldwide. Currently the leading cause of death globally, CVD, is a lifestyle disease. This means that 90% of CVD can be prevented by lifestyle changes. The crucial contribution of the mind-heart connection is increasingly recognized in both causing and treating CVD. This chapter covers the role of mind in CVD causation, mind-heart connection in managing CVD, divergence from our historic lifestyle, sleep and relaxation, yoga and meditation, stress management, meaningful life, mindfulness, and future direction.
