Abstract

The concept of “diabetic cardiomyopathy” is still controversial and a specific strategy to investigate, prevent, and treat heart disease due to diabetes is still lacking. Although type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus differ in etiology and metabolic profiles, the two types share many features of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Diabetic patients have increased incidence of cardiac failure even after controlling coronary artery disease and hypertension. The current definition of diabetic cardiomyopathy comprises structural and functional abnormalities of the myocardium in diabetic patients without coronary artery disease or hypertension. This chapter covers the echocardiography, diastolic dysfunction, and systolic dysfunction.
