Abstract

In epidemiological terms, diabetes is potentially devastatingly lethal disease with approximately 1.5 million deaths every year being attributed to this condition. Cardiovascular complications account for a vast majority of these deaths. A large body of epidemiological and pathological data documents that diabetes is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in both men and women. Patients with diabetes have two to four times increased risk of having coronary artery disease (CAD), ischemic stroke, and other associated vascular events. This chapter covers the coronary arteries in diabetic patients, diabetic cardiomyopathy, noninvasive tests in diabetics for coronary artery disease (which tests), various group of patients to be investigated by stress echocardiography (both exercise or pharmacological), pharmacological stress echocardiography protocol, pharmacological stressors, other pharmacological stressors, diagnostic accuracy and predictive value, and risk stratification for coronary artery disease in diabetic patients.
