Abstract

This chapter describes potential role of rosuvastatin in cardiodiabetes. Rosuvastatin, which is a new generation 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor, exhibits some unique pharmacologic and pharmacokinetics properties. It has low extrahepatic tissue penetration, low potential for CYP3A4 interactions, and substantial LDL-C lowering capacity. Its potential impact in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in different groups including heart failure, elderly, renal failure, and diabetes, and also in combination with other lipid lowering drugs, is the subject of ongoing clinical studies. Rosuvastatin is one of the synthetic statins which is indicated for primary prevention of CVD. This chapter covers the role of rosuvastatin in diabetic hemodialysis patients, role of statin in contrast induced nephropathy, role of rosuvastatin on insulin resistance in diabetic patients, role of statin in stroke prevention, role of statin in metabolic syndrome, and safety of rosuvastatin.
