Abstract

Thyroid diseases and diabetes mellitus (DM) are the two most common endocrine disorders encountered in clinical practice, mutually influencing each other. Diabetes is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In patients with hypothyroidism and diabetes, CVD risk is increased through interrelationship with dyslipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance (IR), and vascular endothelial dysfunction. Thyroid dysfunction is more common in patients with DM than in the normal population. The prevalence of thyroid disorder in diabetic population was found to be 13.4% with the highest prevalence in females with type 1 DM (31.4%) and lowest prevalence in males with type 2 DM (6.9%). Subclinical hypothyroidism is defined biochemically as a normal serum free thyroxine (T4) concentration in the presence of an elevated serum TSH concentration.
