Abstract

Polypill is a drug product in pill form (i.e. tablet or capsule) that combines multiple active pharmaceutical ingredients. It is commonly manufactured as a Fixed-Dose Combination (FDC) drug product targeting treatment or prevention of chronic disease. It can reduce the number of tablets or capsules that need to be taken which in turn may facilitate handling and administration of pharmaceuticals as well as alleviate the pill-burden. The term polypill was first coined in the context of cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention. For CVD prevention, primary or secondary, polypill is currently defined as any drug combination containing BP-lowering drugs along with a statin. Polypill for primary prevention, polypill for secondary prevention, and advantages and disadvantages of polypill are briefly explained in this chapter.
