Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the management strategies of anemia and cardiodiabetes. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of mortality in patients with diabetes accounting for 68% of deaths in patients aged 65 years or more. Anemia is independently associated with an increased mortality rate in patients with chronic heart failure, left ventricular hypertrophy, chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus, and acute coronary syndrome. Anemia in cardiodiabetes can be multifactorial. Antiplatelets and anticoagulants given for the underlying cardiac disease may cause anemia due to gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary blood loss. Although anemia is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes and correction of anemia is required to improve the associated morbidity and mortality, both anemia and blood transfusions are associated with increased mortality.
