Abstract

Hypertension, defined as a sustained blood pressure greater than or equal to 140/90 mm Hg, is a common comorbidity of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The prevalence of hypertension depends on the type of diabetes, age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and race/ethnicity. Hypertension is a major risk factor for both macrovascular and microvascular complications. Hypertension care is guided by recommendations from professional bodies, which collate evidence and propose rational means of assessing and managing high blood pressure. This chapter utilizes the evidence-based recommendations of the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes 2017, the European Society of Hypertension/European Society of Cardiology (ESH/ESC) 2013, and the panel members of the Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC8).
