Abstract

This chapter aims to provide complete detail of cardiogenic shock (CS). CS complicates 5–8% of cases of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and 2.5% of cases of non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients. In these individuals with CS, a vicious cycle is set into motion as profound depression of myocardial contractility leads to low cardiac output (CO) and low blood pressure, thereby leading to further coronary insufficiency, and further reduction in contractility and CO. Etiology, epidemiology of cardiogenic shock, risk factors, diagnosis, management, shock trial registry, and dosage are also discussed in this chapter. Two well-labeled figures and six well-illustrated flowchart are also presented in this chapter.
