Abstract

This chapter focuses on mechanical ventilation in adult respiratory distress syndrome. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) still remains a syndrome with a high incidence, and with an attributable mortality ranging from 40–60%. The most common causes of adults with severe ARDS are sepsis and pneumonia and mortality rates continue to be high. This chapter covers the mechanical ventilation (MV), adjunctive treatments, and prone positioning. Prone positioning (PP) involves rotating the patient from the standard supine position to a face-down or prone position. When supine, the inferior and posterior portions of the lung can become atelectatic from compression by the heart, thorax, and diaphragm.
