Abstract

This chapter describes practice guidelines for ophthalmic anesthesia. Surgical ophthalmology represents the most varied and most frequently performed intervention in operation room (OR). Though considered minor, interventions involving wide spectrum of ophthalmic operations require diligent anesthesia care personalized to individual needs depending on comorbidity, age, and indicated eye ailment. This chapter covers the aims and scope of guidelines for anesthesia in ophthalmologic surgery, guidelines of routine anesthesia care during eye surgery, guidelines to identify, prevent, and manage problems specific to ophthalmology surgery. Guidelines of routine anesthesia care during eye surgery includes preoperative assessment, preparation and premedication, fasting guidelines in patients undergoing eye surgery, guidelines for safe local anesthesia for ophthalmologic surgery, and monitoring guidelines for ophthalmologic surgery.
