This chapter describes the guidelines for the ethical practice of anesthesiology. Ethics is an integral part of the practice of any branch of medicine. Anesthesiologists encounter difficult ethical problems frequently. The practice of anesthesiology today involves special problems relating to the quality and standards of patient care. Rapid technological growth and the expansion of anesthesia services into obstetrics, pediatrics, pain management, and critical care raised many issues such as social, legal, medical, and ethical. Anesthesiologists may circumvent many ethical problems by development of specific policies and in service education programs for their departments in order to better manage ethical issues.
