Abstract

This chapter describes the guidelines for the management of traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been called a “silent epidemic’’, and is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in developed as well as developing nations. Across the globe, more than 10 million people are affected by TBI annually. The rapidly increasing incidence of TBI in developing nations has lead the WHO to suggest that road traffic accidents (RTAs) would become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030. Traumatic brain injury can be classified into primary and secondary brain injuries. Pharmacological therapy and nonpharmacological therapy are also discussed in this chapter. The management of the patient with severe head injury is often complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach, with the primary goal to prevent secondary brain injury. Proper management may help people lead a fulfilling life, despite the severity of injury.
