Abstract

This chapter describes the perioperative guidelines for nonobstetric surgery during pregnancy. Surgery during pregnancy has become much safer than in the past, with better facilities, monitoring and equipment’s making early diagnosis and management easier. Surgical procedures are done more commonly in the first trimester (42%) probably because of undiagnosed pregnancies, while incidence is less in the second (35%) and third (23%) trimesters. Appendectomy and cholecystectomy are the most common procedures performed during pregnancy while surgical interventions are also required for ovarian torsion, adnexal malignancies, neurosurgical or cardiac emergencies. This chapter covers the maternal physiological changes, fetal concerns, and general guidelines for anesthesia management.
