The objective of this chapter is to introduce the Antiepileptics. This chapter covers the essentials of diagnosis of epilepsy, general considerations, types of seizures, evolution of antiepileptics, principles of therapy, phenobarbitone, phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid, ethosuximide, gabapentin, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, tiagabine, topiramate, zonisamide, clonazepam, clobazam, diazepam, primidone, and drug therapy of status epilepticus. Early diagnosis and treatment of seizure disorders with a single appropriate agent offers the best prospect of achieving prolonged seizure free periods with the lowest risk of toxicity. Monotherapy is instituted with a single agent until seizures are controlled or toxic signs occur.
