Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) is a group of lymphomas characterized by Reed-Sternberg cells or lymphocyte predominant cells (LP cells) in an appropriate reactive cellular background. These malignant cells are derived from B-lymphocytes. Hodgkin’s lymphoma is divided into two types such as nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin’s lymphoma and classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Based on morphology, classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma is divided into four histological subtypes. Classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma is characterized by multinucleated Reed-Sternberg cells residing in a background of mixed non-neoplastic reactive inflammatory cells. Reed-Sternberg cells are derived from mature B-cells at the germinal center stage of differentiation, and have monoclonal immunoglobulin gene rearrangements. Hodgkin’s lymphoma has a tendency to arise within a single lymph node area and spreads in an orderly fashion to contiguous lymph nodes. This chapter also covers the Ann Arbor staging of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, classification of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
