Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the myelodysplastic syndromes. Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of clonal hematopoietic stem cell diseases characterized by cytopenia and dysplasia in one or more of the major myeloid cell lines. Cytogenetic and molecular studies play a major role in the evaluation of MDS and overall prognosis. Chromosomes 5, 7, 8, and 20 are among the most common cytogenetic abnormalities observed in MDS. This chapter covers the myelodysplastic or myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS or MPN), WHO classification of myelodysplastic or myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS or MPN), chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia and thrombocytosis, and mastocytosis.
