Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the acute myeloid leukemia (AML). AML is a type of blood cancer. It usually begins in cells that turn into white blood cells. Sometimes, though, AML can start in other types of blood-forming cells. The diagnosis of AML requires a blast count of more than or equal to 20% in the peripheral blood or in the bone marrow. AML with t(8;21), inv(16)(p13;q22) or t(16;16), or (15;17) are classified as AML regardless of the blast count. This chapter covers the WHO classification and prognosis, AML with recurrent genetic abnormalities, AML with myelodysplasia-related changes, therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-AML, t-MDS, and t-MDS/MPN), and acute leukemias of ambiguous lineage.
