Abstract

Primary health care is about shifting the focus ‘upstream’ that is, providing care before individuals get sick or injured and seek urgent medical intervention. Primary health care, for most people, is the first point of contact for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of many conditions that might otherwise make enjoying life a little difficult. This chapter focuses on role of physiotherapy in primary health care. Physiotherapists have an important role to play in the movement towards primary health care. They are encouraged to work with the relevant agencies to promote and facilitate the development of primary health care identifying the core elements. At present physiotherapy services are mainly confined to tertiary health care level only whereas it has huge scope and potential in primary care also. Under umbrella of NRHM all national health programs are being implemented through public health care delivery system in India like NPHCE and NPCDCS, etc. Keeping in consideration, all programs and population size of rural India, there is huge potential and opportunities for delivering physiotherapy services under primary health care system which can be achieved by integrating the physiotherapy services at all levels of health care delivery system.
