Abstract

In current lifestyle, the physical inactivity prevails as a major public health risk factor. Physical inactivity leads paves way to cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, and certain types of cancers. Both physical activity and exercise play an important role in maintaining good health. This chapter gives a general understanding of the exercise physiology. Further, methods of training, summary of acute responses of exercises training, and long-term benefits of exercises have been discussed. Basic principles of exercise testing and prescription are given in detail in ACSM guidelines. pre-evaluation is required before exercise testing which include person’s profile, previous medical illness (if any), patient’s present condition in terms of body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance. Exercise testing, exercise prescriptions, and exercise prescription for moderate risk patients are also included in this chapter.
