Abstract

Retinal detachment (RD) refers to the separation of sensory retina from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). There are two types of retinal detachment such as rhegmatogenous and non-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment often appears secondarily as a consequence of a defect in the entire thickness of sensory retina. Non-rhegmatogenous RD may be tractional or exudative (serous). Traction RD occurs due to the dragging of vitreoretinal adhesions and results with sensory retinal separation from RPE. Differential diagnosis includes retinoschisis, retinal ruptures, choroidal detachment, and posterior scleritis. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment can be treated differently varying upon the location and size of the retinal gap. Therapeutical approaches include retinopexy (only for small, asymptomatic detachments), pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckling surgery, vitrectomy or a combined approach with vitrectomy and scleral buckling.
