Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the pharyngeal apparatus. Pharyngeal apparatus consists of the following as Pharyngeal arches (I, II, III, IV, VI), pharyngeal pouches (I, II, III, IV), pharyngeal groove (I), and pharyngeal membrane (I). The pharyngeal pouch is the evagination of endoderm between adjacent pharyngeal arches. There are I, II, III and IV pharyngeal pouches. Each pharyngeal pouch divides into dorsal and ventral parts. The dorsal part of I and II pharyngeal pouches unite to form the tubotympanic recess. The proximal part of tubotympanic recess forms the auditory or eustachian tube. Pharyngeal Groove is the invagination of ectoderm between the adjacent arches. Pharyngeal Membrane is the part where the ectoderm and endoderm are in contact, between the adjacent pharyngeal arches.
