Abstract

Eye is a special sensory organ for perception of vision. Optic nerve which carries visual impulses is an extension of neural tube that forms the brain. In human being, eye starts developing from 3rd week of intrauterine life. Different parts of eye develop from different sources. By comparison with animal eyes, in human beings eyes are positioned in front of the face than on the lateral side of the face. From the diencephalon part of neural tube, a diverticulum begins. It elongates towards the surface ectoderm. The distal end becomes a cup-shaped structure. The proximal part is optic stalk and the distal part is optic cup. The optic cup initiates the surface ectoderm to form the lens placode in the frontonasal process. Lens vesicle develops from lens placode. The lens vesicle gets detached from the surface ectoderm and gets lodged in the concavity of the optic cup.
