Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the development of skull. Skull is a part of axial skeleton. The skull has two parts following as splanchnocranium or facial skeleton and neurocranium which has the cranial cavity for the brain. Facial skeleton develops from five processes following as frontonasal process, right and left maxillary process, and right and left mandibular process. The maxillary and mandibular processes develop from first pharyngeal arch and they are influenced by the neural crest cells. Base of skull develops from the mesoderm surrounding the cranial end of neural tube. This mesoderm differentiates into parachordal plates, prechordal plates, alisphenoid, and orbitosphenoid.
