Vertebral column is made up of number of irregular bones called vertebrae. It forms the central axis of the body. There are 33 vertebrae which form the vertebral column. Sacral vertebra has five bones which unite to form a single bone (sacrum). Coccygeal vertebra has four bones which unite to form a single bone (coccyx). Spinal nerves pass through the intervertebral foramen which is present in between the vertebrae. This chapter covers the functions of the vertebral column, general features of the cervical vertebra, and types of cervical vertebra. Functions of the Vertebral Column are protects the spinal cord, supports the body, transmits the body weight, gives attachment to the axial/vertebral muscles and ligaments, provides the movement of the trunk.
