The aim of this chapter is to focus on the classification of joints. Articulation between two or more bones forms a joint. Structural classifications of joints are fibrous joints, cartilaginous joints, and synovial joints. The bones forming the joint are connected by fibrous ligament called fibrous joint. There are four subtypes following as sutures, schindylesis, gomphosis, and syndesmosis. Cartilaginous joints are two subtypes primary cartilaginous joint and secondary cartilaginous joint. primary cartilaginous joint is also called synchondrosis. After 25 years of age, the hyaline cartilage is removed and replaced by bone. Classifications of Joints Based on movements are synarthroses or immovable joints, amphiarthroses or partially movable joints, and diarthroses or freely movable joints.
