Abstract

The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. It is referred to as \"central\" because it combines information from the entire body and coordinates activity across the whole organism. Cerebrum has outer gray matter and inner white matter. The gray matter or cerebral cortex has six layers. From external to internal, they are molecular layer, external granular layer, pyramidal cell layer, internal granular layer, and ganglion cell layer or betz cell layer. Cerebellum has outer cortex and inner medulla. Cortex has three layers following as molecular layer is the outer layer with basket cells and stellate cells, Purkinje cell layer is the middle layer, and granular layer is the inner layer with granule cells and Golgi cells.
